Did you know that dental disease is classified as a “silent epidemic” because it is so widespread? Dental health issues are 5 times more common than asthma and 7 times more common than hay fever, and is quickly becoming the single most common disease impacting children.
The good news is that tooth decay is preventable and Woodcreek Healthcare is here to help. Woodcreek is excited to be offering Fluoride Varnish as a part of your young child’s comprehensive exam. We typically will begin offering fluoride varnish as early as 12 months of age as long as your little one has a tooth!
Fluoride Varnish is a treatment to help prevent tooth decay or even stop current decay from becoming worse. Once your child has a tooth, your pediatrician may recommend Fluoride Varnish which can be administered right in our office as a part of your child’s visit. The process consists of just a small amount of fluoride being “painted” on your child’s teeth – it takes only a couple of minutes and provides a protective coating. The varnish is sticky at first and then it hardens very quickly creating a protective coating. Initially there may be some discoloration on the teeth, but that will go away with the next morning’s brushing.
After the Fluoride is applied, it is fine to go about your day normally. Your child may take a drink of water immediately. It is okay to drink and eat other foods as usual, but your child should avoid hard or crunchy fools for the rest of the day. And, it is recommended to skip tooth brushing until the following morning.
The procedure is covered by most insurance companies and can be performed 2-4 times per year. If you have any questions about this, talk to your pediatrician or call our office.
