Amy Lawson Yuen, MD, is board certified in both clinical genetics and pediatrics and offers diagnosis, management, and counseling for genetic conditions. What is a geneticist?

A geneticist is a doctor who has had additional training in conditions that are inherited or due to a change in a gene or chromosome. Genes and chromosomes are inherited from the parents, and serve essentially as a blueprint or instruction manual for the body.

What can I expect at a genetic appointment?

A genetic appointment lasts about one hour. The appointment includes a discussion of the patient’s main concerns, a review of the medical history (including birth history), a detailed family history, and a head-to-toe physical exam. After this, the doctor and patient discuss the findings together and make a plan. Laboratory testing may be ordered if necessary.

If you have any questions about whether your child may benefit from a genetic evaluation, please speak with your primary care provider or call 253.848.8797.
